In the struggle for a better world, setbacks are inevitable. How then do people keep going in the face of political defeat, disappointment and despair? To answer that question, Hannah Proctor's book Burnout draws on historical resources to explore how revolutionaries and activists of the past kept a grip on hope.

On 10 April 2024, Peer hosted the book launch of Burnout by Hannah Proctor. Hannah spoke with art historian Larne Abse Gogarty and presented readings on the theme of political burnout. Listen to their conversation below:

Biographies:

Hannah Proctor is a writer and researcher who holds a Wellcome Trust University Award at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

Larne Abse Gogarty is Associate Professor at the Slade School of Art. She is the author of two books: Usable Pasts: Social Practice and State Formation in American Art (Brill, 2022) and What We Do Is Secret: Contemporary Art and the Antinomies of Conspiracy (Sternberg, 2023).
